DLR Group Announces the opening of Four New AC Hotels by Marriott

DLR Group’s Hospitality Studio announced the opening of four new properties as part of its ongoing design program for AC Hotels by Marriott. To date, the firm has delivered 16 AC Hotels for multiple developers in markets from coast to coast for AC Hotel by Marriott’s portfolio.

“DLR Group’s designs seek to interpret and deliver the AC Hotels by Marriott brand vision and spirit in a distinct and sophisticated way that’s catered to each location,” said DLR Group Global Hospitality Leader Tom Mitchell. “Our aim is to be the most valued partner to Marriott and our owners by celebrating the brand through design, and successfully executing on schedule and on budget.”

DLR Group’s approach to its design program for AC Hotels is wholly unique. Equipped with a deep understanding of the Marriott brand, the design team seeks out inspiration from within the locale to create cohesive concepts that feel both distinctly part of the AC Hotel identity, while still expressing the individual character of the destination. These newest locations are representative of the exceptional partnership DLR Group and AC Hotels by Marriott have cultivated over the last several years.

AC Hotel San Francisco Oyster Point, which opened its doors to guests in October 2017, takes inspiration from its location. Design queues were derived from an oyster, seeking to balance the oyster’s familiar toothy texture with elements of reflection indicative of the bay area. Upon arrival, guests of the 187-room hotel are greeted by the art panels evoking textural ocean shells, which then guide them into the hotel. The lobby features a commissioned ceramic oyster shell installation, which was created by sculptor Kevin Chambers and is suspended from the ceiling.

The team worked with the hotel’s beverage group to design a space fitting for their newest creation “Karl the Fog,” a signature cocktail curated by the rich flavors of the bay. To enhance the beverage focus of the AC Hotel brand, the bar and lounge celebrates waterfront views by introducing smoked chrome at each end, creating a reflective surface that echoes the immersive feeling of Oyster Bay.

AC Hotel Chapel Hill Downtown, which opened in December 2017, transforms Southern hospitality with a hint of European flair. The 128-room hotel’s central location in downtown Chapel Hill, N.C., supports the city’s bustling revitalization. DLR Group’s design offers guests sleek, sophisticated aesthetics, and design queues throughout the building celebrate a southern gathering place: the front porch. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by an inviting outdoor communal lounge that features soft seating and a fire pit. Travelers can enjoy a community mural and collection of regional artwork, while guestrooms provide an oasis of modern design, with sleek furnishings and classic hardwood floors. The bar/lounge features architectural gateways made out of wood and smoked chrome, while curvilinear wire sculptural art and soft drapery soften the aesthetic of elegant furniture and full glass views.

AC Hotel Spartanburg opened in December 2017 in the heart of Spartanburg, S.C, , and offers a modern interpretation of the classic, high-style that has become a staple of the AC Hotels by Marriott brand. The AC Hotel’s Spartanburg location brings the franchise’s signature design to the headquarter city of OTO Development, a nationally-recognized organization that owns the San Francisco, Spartanburg and Chapel Hill locations, as well as numerous locations across the country.

DLR Group’s design approach for the Spartanburg location makes it the first property in the U.S. to blend classic architecture styling with modern interior flair, and redefines Spartanburg’s historic downtown skyline. Guests of the 114-room hotel can enjoy a museum-like experience on its first and second floor, which is filled with original artwork created by faculty members and students at the experimental arts enclave of Black Mountain College.

AC Hotel Gainesville, opened in February 2018, reflects the soul of the city and its culture of exploration. Situated adjacent to the University of Florida, DLR Group’s refined interior design presents an elegant interpretation of research and biotech through the use of polished and tactile materials. The 146-room hotel offers travelers the opportunity to view work created by local artists and inspired by bio-research, while guests can enjoy rooms filled with sleek furniture and premium bedding.

DLR Group’s first AC Hotel design for was the AC Hotel Westport in Kansas City, which opened in 2015; since that time, the firm has continued a partnership with Marriott and developers to collaborate on an additional 15 properties across the country. AC Hotels by Marriott has been opening locations in urban neighborhoods across the United States since 2011.
