Sorg Architects Joins DLR Group

(WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 21, 2015) – DLR Group and Sorg Architects jointly announced today the two firms are joining operations. The Sorg Architects office in Washington, D.C. will merge into DLR Group as DLR Group | Sorg. Suman Sorg, FAIA, will continue to lead design for the Washington, D.C. location. Nikki Sorg will lead operations, and Rachel Chung, AIA, PMP, will manage the design studio.

The merger of Sorg Architects into DLR Group as DLR Group | Sorg forms an integrated design firm with an increased scale and presence on the East Coast. It continues DLR Group’s geographic expansion strategy to provide its core Civic, Courts, Detention, Higher Education, Hospitality, K-12 Education, Retail, Sports, and Workplace market expertise to new clients while adding additional market types to the firm’s portfolio.

“The addition of Sorg Architects gives DLR Group a physical location in Washington, D.C., and a high profile presence along the East Coast,” said DLR Group CEO Griff Davenport, AIA. “Sorg Architects is an award-winning, recognized design firm with a culture that shares our passion to elevate the human experience through design.”

Sorg Architects was founded in 1986 by Suman Sorg, FAIA. The firm brings a design staff of 30, and with completed projects in more than 40 countries, its portfolio and international experience significantly enhances DLR Group’s global reach.

“Now is the right time and place for Sorg Architects to join a national design firm to enhance our competitive position in a changing marketplace,” said Sorg. “DLR Group shares our passion and commitment to design excellence and this will allow us to use design to influence the built environment on a larger scale. This also provides our staff access to new project types and leadership opportunities in DLR Group, and to be employee-owners in the firm.”

Joining with DLR Group, Sorg Architects enhances its competitive position in Washington, D.C. and the Mid-Atlantic Region by adding additional design resources and new building type expertise. Sorg Architects also secures a broader reach for its award-winning design through DLR Group’s 21 global locations, and the ability to provide clients integrated planning, engineering, interiors, and energy services in-house.

Sorg Architects has an extensive national and international practice and is the only Washington, D.C. headquartered firm on ARCHITECT magazine’s ranking of the Top 50 U.S. firms. The firm’s core markets include Civic, K-12 Education, Federal Government, Multi-Family Housing, Recreation, and Workplace. Sorg Architects also brings an impressive portfolio of national and international historic preservation work to DLR Group.

“Suman Sorg has built one of the leading design firms in Washington, D.C. over the past 30 years,” said Davenport. “Sorg Architects brings new expertise and global experience to our firm. This significantly adds to the diversity of DLR Group and its leadership and I am excited to see how these new perspectives elevate our culture and our design.”

Sorg Architects will operate as DLR Group | Sorg and the firms will strategically integrate operations by the end of DLR Group’s fiscal year in September. A separate Sorg Architects location in New Delhi, India is not part of the transaction.
