Renovations are Underway at El Paso High School

DLR Group joined more than 100 El Paso Independent School District leaders, community members, students, staff, and parents at a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate renovations at El Paso High School in Texas. DLR Group designed the improvements in collaboration with local architectural firm MNK Architects, which include upgraded learning environments and a new fine arts building to serve choir, band, and fine arts programs.

The centerpiece of the project is a new 32,000-SF fine arts building that incorporates the latest in arts and performance curriculum. It is located on the northeast corner of the campus. A double volume entry draws natural light deep into the facility and frames visual connectivity between the inside of the facility and the surrounding campus. Adjacent to the lobby is a learning stair that allows for casual student interaction. It provides a gathering spot for impromptu performances, and offers students a space to develop positive relationships critical to their social and emotional wellbeing.

“DLR Group is proud to partner with MNK Architects to design improvements that will serve El Paso High School students and the surrounding community for generations,” says Taryn Kinney, AIA, DLR Group K-12 education leader in Texas. “El Paso High School is a beloved facility in the community and, from the beginning, our goal was to preserve its iconic stature. The architectural style for the new fine arts building complements the high school’s original design from 1916, and establishes a harmonious balance between existing and new facilities on campus.”

In addition to the new fine arts building, other campus improvements include repurposing existing arts spaces and classrooms into modern science labs for hands-on learning activities, upgraded restrooms, and improved accessible accommodations.

The $19.5M project is funded by a November 2016 voter-approved bond referendum, and is expected to open in fall 2020. The total $668.8M district-wide bond includes modernizing and right-sizing the district through consolidations, facility improvements, and new construction projects.
