DLR Group to Design Expansion of Campus Arts Facilities

DLR Group will provide design services for the expansion of The Ohio State University’s Arts District, a project that advances Framework 2.0, the university’s long-term planning vision. Ohio State first engaged the firm in 2016 for an Arts District Master Plan with programming to support teaching, learning and community engagement.

“It is a privilege to be selected for the Arts District project,” said DLR Group Cultural+Performing Arts Leader Paul Westlake, FAIA. “Since its establishment in 1870, Ohio State has grown to accommodate more than 59,000 students and become one of the nation’s top public universities. We look forward to designing spaces that will serve as important assets to the university and the community for years to come.”

An earlier programming study (completed by DLR Group) identified the relocation of the Department of Theatre, consolidation of the fine arts, music, dance and theatre library collections, and the expansion of Weigel Hall for the School of Music and moving-image production major.

The design will focus on high-quality learning environments for interaction across the arts with long-term plans to open Ohio State’s front door to the heart of the University District at 15th Avenue and High Street.

Design for the updated Arts District will enhance collaboration between schools with similar programmatic needs, and improve public spaces and streetscapes to support the university’s academic mission.

DLR Group is collaborating with Robert AM Stern Architects on the project, which is currently in the schematic design phase, and is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2021.
