He works with designers, building type experts, and discipline leaders to investigate and invent new technologies, materials, and methodologies to elevate the ability of DLR Group design teams to deliver sustainable, high performance buildings.

At DLR Group R&D is dedicated to advancing the disciplines of architecture, engineering, and interiors. Around the globe the design industry is applying new architectural processes that blur the traditional boundaries between research and practice. Joe is at the forefront of this movement, collaborating with DLR Group professionals, academia, other researchers, and a variety of industry partners to investigate the boundary of design innovation.

Prior to joining DLR Group, MacDonald was founding principal of the research based firm Urban A&O in New York. He also served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design from 2000 to 2010.
