"I've found that most educators can function in any type of space. However, it isn't until they work in and experience a space that was designed specifically for what they do that they understand how design can truly impact them. Hearing educators talk about how space has positively influenced the way they teach, and how students learn, keeps me inspired."

Sara has dedicated her career solely to educational environments, and brings a wealth of experience from both the design and district perspective. In addition to being an experienced architect, she previously served as facilities director at multiple school districts in Minnesota, overseeing capital projects, facility master planning, and facility operations and maintenance.

Sara leads DLR Group’s K-12 Education practice serving school district clients in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Working from the firm’s Minneapolis studio, Sara is responsible for establishing new relationships with potential clients, and collaborating with school districts to design facilities that meet the educational needs of local communities.

"Environmental stewardship, to me, means making design decisions that not only benefit the environment, but those that positively impact the health of students and reduce overall operational costs for school districts at the same time. Healthy environments are better learning environments, and the reduction in school operational costs means more money for everything else that holistically supports student education."

She actively participates in the industry, formerly holding leadership positions with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Saint Paul and Minnesota chapters. She also is currently a member of the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE), and the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) Midwest Great Lakes Region and Minnesota chapter.
