“I envision a redefinition of sustainable design to a data-driven, scientific-centric process - where building performance is verified.”
Shona’s focus on efficiency and indoor environmental quality is an important component of DLR Group’s Building Performance team, supporting the firm's pursuit of sustainable building design and operation. Her primary goal is to challenge people to think differently about the way they design and operate buildings; advising teams from sustainable goal setting to efficient operations. She uses building simulation to help designers quantify energy savings and understand the interactions of building design with the mechanical systems and with the environment.
“I believe it is important that we as an industry continue think differently about design, to leverage sustainability and high performance as the smart thing to do with respect to economic viability, in addition to the responsible thing to do for the environment.”
Born and raised in Ireland, Shona earned an honors degree in Building Services Engineering from the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland's leading sustainable building engineering program, and moved to the Midwest as part of the Atlantis dual master’s program in Sustainability, Technology and Innovation at Purdue University. She currently serves as Young Engineers in ASHRAE Region VI Coordinator, Vice President of the Chicago Chapter of IBPSA, Board Member and Chair of Sustainability Committee for Chicago Chapter of IFMA.
