"These are the three biggest lessons I’ve learned about design in practice: first, collaboration is the key to a happy team; second, if you want to succeed, it’s all about having great people on board; and third, whether you have a little of it or a lot, time can always be your friend if you approach it that way.”

Steve is DLR Group's National Design Leader and a member of the firm’s executive leadership team. A native of Scotland, Steve began his career in 1991 designing for clients in Europe and the West Indies before joining DLR Group. Now he collaborates with the firm's professionals around the world to advance integrated design excellence, with emphasis on leading innovations and trends in design, process, and team culture.

When working with clients, Steve specializes in design discovery, working with client and design teams to determine visionary goals and objectives, programmatic synergies, and design concepts that offer unique means of creating world-class environments. He is an active leader in the design community, a member of the AIA Large Firm Round Table Sustainable Committee, and a Senior Fellow and Executive Board Member of the Design Futures Council.

Steve has also been instrumental in evolving DLR Group's design process to increase value to clients and to align with Architecture 2030's energy-focused 2030 Challenge, including authorship of the firm's formal action plan for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2030 Commitment.

"It's been fantastic to see our staff take up the call of sustainable design, and especially to see young professionals just run with it by conducting research and presentations, and pushing peers to some great achievements on projects. Their energy is phenomenal, and it's a thrill to support them and help them along the paths of Architecture 2030 and LEED."

In recent work for clients, Steve has championed evidence-based design to elevate buildings and spaces as cultural and business assets that produce meaningful return on investment for owners. His work includes helping Boeing engage international VIP clientele in a brand experience when acquiring large-body commercial aircraft at the new Everett Delivery Center; working with the student body at The Evergreen State College to transform an under-used building into a LEED Gold College Activities Building; and collaborating with developers like General Growth Properties and Simon Properties to reorient existing enclosed malls to become outward-facing shopping and dining destinations.
