Design Achievement – When Anacostia residents requested that the modernization of the iconic Anacostia High School serve as a functional and symbolic window to the future, the project team responded with a solution that gives voice to the students and community. DLR Group's design supports the academic mission of the District while highlighting a historic 1930s landmark building. Interior restoration efforts focused on significant historic spaces, such as the auditorium and gymnasium. The renovation effort targeted classrooms, and by utilizing found spaces, designers were able create a vibrant, light-filled cafeteria. The redesign of exterior entries improves security for the school by regulating circulation to the campus’s many shared facilities. In addition, this significant effort brought the facility up to current building code and accessibility standards. The design also leverages art as a primary design feature. In collaboration with the Washington, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, a local artist was commissioned to collaborate with students to create murals that were screen printed and displayed as a design feature throughout the corridors adding character to the building.

Scope Summary – The 200,000 SF modernization of this 1,200-student facility includes new classrooms, labs, cafeteria space, gymnasium, auditorium, media center, as well as new building systems, electrical, and data design. Characteristics of this structure include fine architectural detail work, high ceilings, large windows, as well as terrazzo and wood flooring—all of which were covered over or severely damaged over the years. The use of innovative green building strategies for existing and historic structures resulted in a new school facility that is LEED Gold. The building includes vegetated green roofs on appropriate flat roof areas, and utilizes a cistern to collect rainwater that is used to flush toilets throughout the building. DLR Group provided architecture design and planning services.

DLR Group acquired Sorg Architects in September 2015. Today, the combined design expertise and resources of Sorg and DLR Group serve clients as a global, integrated design firm committed to elevating the human experience through design.
