Design Achievement - Avalon Square is a mixed use development encompassing one square city block in downtown Waukesha, Wisconsin. DLR Group's urban infill campus design for Presbyterian Homes of Wisconsin gives residents comfortable housing within a vibrant neighborhood. Independent assisted living and CBRF units are included in the four-story new construction, as well as the remodeled and renovated Avalon Manor and historic Waukesha Hotel. Residents have access to and experience a hierarchy of social spaces on the ground level, including retail space that supports and enhances the existing urban fabric of main street and is open to the public as well as residents. The project's scale and use of materials were carefully developed to be sensitive and compatible with the historic downtown context.

Scope Summary - The scope of work encompassed urban infill campus design for a mixed-use senior living community totalling 227,510 SF of constructed and renovated space one one square city block. Housing spans three building levels over one level of retail, and includes 27 Memory Care units, 52 Assisted Living units, 68 Independent Living apartments. The Town Center Commons includes dining, coffee shop, chapel, library, activities, health club, and general store. A historic-preservation mandate for the project included renovating an existing circa-1928 building (opened as Avalon Manor in 1968) while respecting its fa├žade, and completely rebuilding an 1871 hotel, including a cupola that had deteriorated over the years. DLR Group provided architecture services.
