College of the Desert Student Learning Center43-500 Monterey Avenue
Palm Desert, CA 92260
Design Achievement – DLR Group's design for this new Student Learning Center enhances the delivery of services to students by providing them with a one-stop location for multiple services. In order to fulfill its Educational Master Plan, the College of the Desert identified a number of academic, student service, and student life functions scattered across campus that could be consolidated into a single facility. The building's design is an open and inviting edifice that stretches its arms to the community, fits within the context of the existing campus buildings, and allows for easy access to the students with multiple points of entry. The dramatic glass entrance lobby transforms into a glowing lantern at night, which serves as a beacon and facilitates wayfinding. The entrance is shaped like the open pages of a book and allows for views into the main lobby atrium, while the vertical articulation of the deep-set windows of the building responds to the desert conditions and the character of the existing buildings.
Scope Summary – The scope of work for this project included the design of a new 48,306 SF, LEED Gold Certified Student Learning Center. The first floor features an expanded bookstore and a new Bursar's office for the billing and collection of funds. Additional student services on the first floor include Disabled Student Programs and Services, and a Student Health Center. The second floor houses Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, and the Veterans Office. There are office suites on the second floor for Academic Counseling and Education Services, Upward Bound; and the International Education Program. A 46 station computer lab used for assessment testing, new student orientation and other registration activities will be used throughout the year.
