Design Achievement – The Pequot Lakes Area School District wanted to reflect its community's concern for sustainable solutions by exploring energy-efficient and nature-sensitive facility options. DLR Group responded with an elementary school designed to LEED Gold standards with elements impacting site, water, energy, and materials. The school is sited on a previously-developed area, minimizing disturbance of existing farmland, woodlands and wetlands, with low-maintenance landscaping choices transitioning from the building to a newly developed nature preserve. Storm water runoff is collected and recycled for irrigation. An east-west orientation maximizes classroom daylighting. Expanded commissioning services maintain enhanced energy performance and indoor environmental air quality, complying with DOE Energy Star requirements. The topography of the north woods informed the school's exterior imagery. An ashlar pattern of rock face CMU works in conjunction with textured face brick to form a massive wall image. The airy framework of steel tube trusses and canopies covered by standing seam metal roofing forms the sloped roof structures of north woods architecture. The exterior palette is pulled to the interiors to create a consistent design vocabulary.
Scope Summary – The scope for this project was a new 111,600 SF elementary school to house 750 students in grades K-5. The two-story walkout structure integrates core facilities to allow for future expansion without extensive site rework and without dramatically changing the way the building functions. Indoor spaces include administration, classrooms, two-station gymnasium, competition gym, building storage, locker rooms, dining space and discovery centers. Flexible classroom arrangements allow a larger student population to circulate through the building. Outdoor areas include playfields, an amphitheater with terraced seating and outdoor classroom space. Separate bus and automobile traffic circulation routes address concerns for student safety. DLR Group provided community consensus building and bond referendum assistance, architecture, construction services, construction management and commissioning.
