Design Achievement – In order to meet campus master plan goals, East Los Angeles College strategically consolidated program and functional spaces located in two existing buildings into a new Classroom Building. DLR Group’s design for the Classroom Building addresses the physical, functional, and accessibility needs of a modern classroom facility, while complementing existing campus buildings and outdoor spaces. The result is a cohesive design that blends in with the College's American Modern Collegiate-style campus and provides students, faculty, and staff with a pleasant outdoor plaza. Vertically-expressed, open stair elements protrude into the outdoor plaza, enlivening the building with color and movement as students ascend and descend via open balcony entries on every floor. A large canopy over the entrance provides students with a weather-protected gathering place in front of the building, as well as an open-air balcony with plaza views above the entrance. The building’s facade serves as a backdrop to the large plaza in front of the building, defining a unique outdoor space that echoes the campus’ other outdoor gathering spaces.
Scope Summary – The scope of work for this project encompassed a new three-story 45,100 SF classroom building. Classrooms are located on the first and second floors to facilitate student access with administrative functions and faculty offices on the third floor. The building consists of 22 classrooms, two conference rooms, and the offices and support spaces for each department. The new Classroom Building houses multiple departments, including Business Administration; Child, Family and Education; Philosophy; Psychology, and Social Science.
