Design Achievement – Golden West College’s Criminal Justice Training program required new and expanded facilities to support its growing program. Coast Community College District awarded the new Criminal Justice Training Center at Golden West College to the Swinerton Builders/DLR Group design-build team. Our challenge was to take the existing completed basis for design criteria package and improve upon it, innovate, and most of all, improve operations. DLR Group’s design for the facility improves the process of training from the most academic, classroom-based training environment to the most intensely practical training, while simultaneously providing an insular, intensive, dedicated environment on the main level for police academy students and a delineated second level that could cater to general GWC students with an interest in police training classes, while not mixing the two diverse groups. This is a unique set of requirements squeezed into a tight, urban fabric. Specialty elements of the project include: a grinder, a large shared concrete pad for drills and exercise, as well as ceremony, a biddle course, a state mandated training obstacle course with running paths and wall scaling where all activities are timed and a scenario lab, a future element that includes a scenario village with both commercial and residential faces that can be used to set up realistic scenarios for rescues, hostage situations and emergency response with vehicles. This element defines the south edge of the site, segregating the scale of pedestrian areas toward the building and vehicle areas. This includes a tie between the scenario lab and pullover road, where cadets can hone their craft at real-world pull over scenarios.
Scope Summary – This new 43,600 SF two-story building includes classrooms, locker rooms, training rooms, simulation labs, fitness lab, ready room, mat room, armory, scenario labs and an administration suite and multi-purpose room. Outdoor areas include a grinder area, biddle course, parking, traffic stop street, a scenario village and a memorial. DLR Group provided architecture and interior design services.
