Huili SchoolNo. 235 Linyao Road
Design Achievement - Nestled in the densely populated Qiantan International Business District of Shanghai, the Huili School is a bilingual private school aimed to help students develop a deep understanding of Chinese culture and the English language. Inspired by Wellington College in England, it combines western and eastern culture into a curriculum that offers a world-class educational experience for Chinese students, giving them the skills needed to compete in a global economy. Huili School adopts a house-based teaching model, which assigns students to one of four houses where they are supported by tutors and a headmaster. DLR Group’s innovative and vertically-driven design provides spaces for both house and school-wide collaboration, with emphasis on STEAM and 21st Century Learning through its classroom, workshop, and studio spaces. This fosters a close-knit community and stimulates a sense of belonging while encouraging informal meetings, gatherings, and mentoring amongst teachers and students.
Scope Summary - Phase One of the campus consists of an 85,000 SF facility that houses 1,080 students in grades 1-9. Phase Two will be completed in 2021 and include an additional 61,000 SF feet to accommodate 300 more students in grades 10-12. The campus includes independent learning areas, laboratories, workshops, art and music rooms, as well as outdoor play, recreational, and learning spaces. The independent learning areas feature open views, built-in displays, and flexible furniture that can be adapted to fit various educational activities. In addition to on-site sports venues, such as indoor swimming pools, fitness facilities, dance rooms, a basketball court, 200-meter track, soccer practice fields, and climbing rocks, the campus is integrated into the surrounding community and has access to the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center for extracurricular activities.
