A Centralized Courthouse Design That Serves the Community

Project Location

Torrington, CT

Area

184,000 SF

Completion Date

2018

The new Litchfield Judicial District Courthouse is a judge’s dream 45 years in the making. Like all civic buildings, the new facility represents the community and reaffirms that justice is available to all and that the courts are for everyone.

Designed as a 75- to 100-year building, the complex marries art and function, centralizing roles previously dispersed throughout the county. The courthouse now houses courts for juvenile, criminal, family, and civil matters, as well as offices for probation officers, district attorneys, and other court support functions under one roof.

Our design integrates the site aesthetically into the existing context of the surrounding neighborhood, reflecting a traditional courthouse with a colonnade and clock/stair tower. Its cast stone and brick exterior make a respectful addition to the local community while creating a clear and dignified presence of justice. Natural light floods the main entry lobby and provides a welcoming civic environment for the visiting public. In all, the project took 31 months to complete, from the start of design through substantial completion. The building is designed to the state of Connecticut’s high-performance building standards.
