Maarifa KCA University Master PlanNairobi
Design Achievement – To become more student-centered, KCA University wanted a comprehensive plan that addressed the unprecedented enrollment growth, increased campus visibility and improved the overall quality of the physical environment. DLR Group’s master plan prepares the University for increasing enrollment, develops the design platform for an enriched, traditional student experience and establishes a phased approach that meets regulatory standards and available funding. Relocating the main entrance to face the adjacent Thika highway increases visibility, improves access, and provides a direct connection to the new campus quad. The plan guidelines establish a unique architectural aesthetic that creates a holistic campus environment while improving flexibility and adaptability. The phasing in the plan responds to projected enrollment growth in a financially feasible manner by providing a high rate of return on current student satisfaction, new student recruiting, and regulatory compliance in addition to financial investments. The phased approach systematically removes buildings that can no longer service the needs of a modern education while replacing them with a combination of revitalized and new spaces that create a more formal, traditional organization to the campus. The new education spaces provide classroom configurations that accommodate different classroom sizes without sacrificing utilization rates.
Scope Summary – KCA University master plan covers 37,800 square meters and supports a growth projection of up to 14,000 students. The first phase of construction establishes the new campus entry along Thika Highway, creates modern, interactive classrooms, and establishes a student services hub that focuses on student enrollment and the necessary administrative spaces to support the growing campus. DLR Group provided master planning services.
