Design Achievement – The New Century Fieldhouse fulfills a large, booming regional sports community's need for year-round practice and game complex. The Johnson County Park and Recreation Department purchased, as an investment, a new but incomplete and unoccupied warehouse building with the hopes of turning the building into an indoor fieldhouse. DLR Group's design fulfills the County's multi-use court, indoor field, and program needs with a simple and effective plan that maximizes the use of space by using a core of multi-use and support spaces to bisect the voluminous warehouse into two distinct field/court zones. An artificial turf field in one zone supports soccer, football, and other field sports, while multiple court configurations in the second zone support basketball, volleyball, and other court sports. The use of CMU and other durable materials align with the hard-use needs of these spaces. Bold color applications, supergraphics, and wood and metal accent finishes create a cool, vibrant experience. Large-scale wayfinding graphics celebrate the energetic atmosphere and help users navigate within the Fieldhouse's large volume.
Scope Summary – The scope encompassed converting a warehouse into a 89,000 SF indoor field house. The facility includes two large field and multi-court spaces for soccer, basketball, volleyball, and futsal. A two level mezzanine space and pedestrian spine divides the two main playing spaces and provides sports observation areas from both sidelines. Multi-purpose rooms (one large multi-purpose room to accommodate 130 persons, and four smaller party rooms, each with maximum occupancy of 20-24) give the Fieldhouse expanded use with opportunities for parties, banquets, classes, and meetings. Spaces also include a reception area and lobby, elevators, stairs, a main office, concessions, and public restrooms. The project earned LEED Gold certification, the first public recreation center in the KC metro area to receive any LEED certification. DLR Group provided planning, architecture, interiors, graphic design, MEP and structural engineering, and LEED coordination services.
