Design Achievement – The Overland Park Soccer Complex is the premier facility in the United States for youth soccer tournaments. The complex held its inaugural tournament in September 2009 and it has exceeded all expectations of the City of Overland Park, Kan., players and fans. The complex features 12 competition fields; each with lighting and artificial turf so play can continue through inclement weather and ensure regional and national tournament play stays on schedule. 24 youth-size fields can also be configured to accommodate local recreation play. A large tensile fabric shade structure is a key design element and focal point of the complex. It creates a central pavilion that serves as a public plaza between the indoor fieldhouse and Championship Field Grandstand, which features fixed seating for 500 fans.
Scope Summary – The scope of this project called for the design and construction of a multi-function soccer complex intended to host national youth soccer tournaments. The design features 12 competition fields, pavilion area, Great Lawn, and a 16,000 SF, 2-story fieldhouse. The canopied pavilion is where team events and medal ceremonies can be hosted and shade and rain protection. The Great Lawn is designed as a kick around and warm up area, and also serves as a vendor midway during tournaments. The fieldhouse includes office space for local soccer club organizations as well as a referee lounge, locker rooms, and first aid facilities. A community meeting room with kitchen and 2-story public lobby is also provided. Restrooms and concessions are located throughout the complex with fun zones featuring playgrounds and shade structures. DLR Group provided integrated planning; architecture; structural, electrical, and mechanical engineering; landscape architecture; and interiors for the project.
