Design Achievement - DLR Group’s renovation and expansion of the Rochelle Athletic Center plays an integral part in attracting top student-athletes to the University of Wyoming. The university’s goal is to develop its players into the best students and athletes they can possibly be with the help of the High Altitude Performance Center. The facility capitalizes on the competitive advantage of physical training for athletes at Laramie’s elevation of 7,220 feet above sea level. Sited in the north end zone of War Memorial Stadium, the facility creates a stunning presence and branding tool that promotes the university’s commitment to not only Cowboy football, but to all of its athletic programs. The building’s exterior design incorporates the materials and architectural style prevalent throughout campus, inspired by UW’s historic sandstone buildings. Inside, the spaces are programmed to provide a modern, state-of-the-art facility that supports a holistic approach to the development of all Cowboy student-athletes. New or expanded spaces focus on academic success, nutrition, strength and conditioning, recovery, sports medicine, and rehabilitation.
Scope Summary - The central focus of this 118,000-SF renovation and expansion is to provide the Wyoming football program with the tools it needs to consistently win conference championships and earn national recognition. The facility also provides a state-of-the art development and performance facility that benefits each of Wyoming’s more than 400 student-athletes. Upon entering the facility, visitors and athletes immediately experience the history and tradition of Cowboy Football. The strength and performance center and new football locker room are located on the main level, along with an impressively tiered lecture hall and sports medicine and rehabilitation center, all of which is utilized by all athletic teams and athletes. On the second level, existing football coach office suite and meetings rooms have been reconfigured and enlarged to increase efficiencies for busy student-athletes and coaches. The second floor expansion includes a new training table, featuring a dramatic view of the football playing field. The academic center was expanded and enhanced, enabling UW to position itself as a leader in the development of student-athletes, both athletically and academically. The facility is also designed with the prospective recruit in mind, to tell the great story of UW Athletics and showcase the features that will maximize their potential as student-athletes. DLR Group provided programming, architecture, and interior design services.
