Design Achievement - After successfully completing the facilities master plan for Natomas USD, DLR Group was retained by the District to design a new campus to house 1,000 students in Kindergarten to eighth grade. Westlake Charter School currently operates from two separate campuses, consisting entirely of portable classroom buildings. DLR Group’s design will provide a permanent school to combine all K-8 students to one location. With a curriculum focusing on diversity, foreign language and academic excellence – a mission in line with the District’s goal of creating responsible, global citizens – the proposed learning environment provides the backbone for the growth of these future leaders. The organizational model utilized promotes cross-pollination between classes and age groups, creates common areas to encourage a sense of community, and provides ample outdoor learning spaces with all of these components all serving to support this mission. While traditional spaces are provided, additional flex spaces, outdoor learning areas, and multipurpose rooms create opportunities for the student to engage in small, medium, and large group activities. Situated on an undeveloped site within a partially developed housing development, the design opportunity allowed for the creation of a community within a community. The exterior facades of the building elements address the suburban surrounding through subtle volume variations while the main focus of the architecture address the interiority of the school site.
Scope Summary - In addition to modern learning spaces, the 84,000-SF Westlake Charter School will feature a administration, library, multipurpose/gymnasium, and abundant technology to support the District’s commitment to a technology-rich environment. Sustainable design strategies were employed throughout the design process. Consideration was given towards building orientation, shading devices, and access to both daylighting and natural ventilation as pertaining to the classroom environment and the flex spaces. High performance lighting and mechanical systems were utilized throughout the site while targeting the CHPS design points required for verified status. DLR Group is providing programming, architectural and interior design services.
