DLR Group Transforms 1970s Building at Colorado State University-Pueblo

Colorado State University-Pueblo officially opened its new Center for Integrated Health and Human Inquiry on August 20. Built in 1975, the former Psychology building was the most heavily used academic building on campus despite its technological and spatial limitations, including minimal areas for students and staff to work together. DLR Group’s design solution overhauls the facility by expanding academic, support, and social spaces to accommodate projected enrollment growth and address existing limitations.

Prominently located along the Paseo – the campus’ main circulation path – CIHHI’s welcoming new entry improves accessibility to the Paseo. The transformed building, which is a hub for interdisciplinary activity, houses the College of Health, Education and Nursing, academic departments from the humanities and social sciences disciplines, as well as student counseling and student health services. It features new classrooms and labs, breakout spaces, and group huddle areas for collaboration among all programs and departments. Included in the nursing program are four simulation ICU rooms, four examination rooms, and 12 general nursing beds. The experience begins at the front door of the department with a nursing station reception desk and waiting area. In addition, the main corridor offers a real-world atmosphere with handwashing stations, medicine storage, and equipment rooms.

“DLR Group’s design incorporates modern lab environments to enhance simulation and authentic learning experiences that are crucial for students, especially those seeking healthcare careers,” said DLR Group Principal Bob Binder, AIA. “CIHHI is a true collaboration hub for faculty and students to develop meaningful relationships beyond their learning environments.”

The $16.8 million project includes 46,580 SF of renovation of academic and support spaces and a 5,250 SF addition. Renovations also include upgrades to building and technology systems to create a more comfortable learning environment.
