Ribbon Cut for New Teacher Preparation Academy in California

Members of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) gathered on March 15 to celebrate the grand opening and renaming of the new Dr. Richard A. Vladovic Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy. The Dr. Richard A. Vladovic Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy (HTPA) is a dual-enrollment program that allows LAUSD students in grades 9-12 to earn an associate degree while concurrently earning their high school diploma. In 2002, LACCD and LAUSD collaborated to start the program to raise graduation rates and address a local teacher shortage. The new facility, which includes HTPA, officially opened in fall 2018.

“DLR Group’s exterior design adheres to Harbor College campus aesthetics with the use of modern materials such as metal and glass. Our contemporary design also features a brick tone to complement surrounding buildings and blend nicely with the larger campus,” said DLR Group Senior Associate Eric Goldberg, AIA. “Our interior design successfully incorporates flexible spaces where students can challenge each other intellectually, and think analytically and creatively as they prepare for futures in education.”

DLR Group’s design features two buildings - one for academics and one for activities. The 26,166 SF academic facility features 12 classrooms, two flexible laboratories, one multi-media classroom, and administrative offices. The 11,167 SF activities building includes spaces for physical education and performing arts functions, as well as three classrooms. DLR Group utilized a two-building solution to frame an exterior courtyard for additional collaboration and socialization opportunities.
