Resilient Design: an AEC Answer to Natural Disasters
Humanity excels at responding to natural disasters. We pick ourselves up and unite to rebuild our communities. I saw this first-hand as part of the DLR Group team that worked with Joplin Schools to rebuild after a devastating tornado.
Working with Joplin’s passionate and determined community to immediately create an interim high school (to serve students displaced when their facility was reduced to rubble) was one of the most inspiring design experiences of my life, and watching my peers here work with them on a full replacement school equally so. But I hope never to have to see that again. Wishful thinking? As an architect, as an educator, and as a mom, I’d like to be able to say no, it’s not. But right now we’re seeing an increasing number and severity of major weather events due to climate change, which means we need to do something.
