- What: Equity in Urban Development: Design, Build, and Empower to Promote Social Sustainability.
This session will offer an exclusive first-time look at a real-world case study of equity in urban development through the lens of design, building, and empowerment of existing citizens to promote social sustainability. Freedom West Homes, a 47-year-old, 382-unit affordable COOP development on four blocks in downtown San Francisco, bounded by Fulton, Gough, Golden Gate, and Laguna in the Fillmore District, is being replaced by a highly integrated new development that will both rehouse the existing COOP owners on site and create additional affordable units alongside 2,000 market-rate units. The project’s planning, design, and development approach is creating a model for the neighborhood’s African American community to thrive while also benefiting in the city’s real estate evolution. The panel will discuss the unique and highly diverse teaming structure encompassing numerous local minority-owned companies that will work collectively to deliver one of the country’s first equity-oriented development projects of this scale.
