“Inherently, every project has a unique design solution. I love being able to work within an integrated approach to help provide a structure that responds to those collective design goals. Delivering projects that are functional and sustainable, as well as aesthetically pleasing, is the benchmark for good architecture and engineering.”
Tom is a key leader of DLR Group's structural engineering team. He works as a member of the integrated design team in Phoenix and with DLR Group offices across the country to deliver projects in a variety of markets including civic, detention, K-12 education, retail, and sports. In addition to the production of structural documents, Tom also assists in the development of architectural documents and coordinates the integration of structural and mechanical systems. He is driven by an intrinsic interest in how buildings work and function, understanding that sometimes the most effective concepts are created when one takes a step back to examine the larger picture.
“I enjoy having the ability to be involved from the project’s inception through its completion. This helps to instill equity and ownership in the process, which ultimately delivers a better project.”
Patriot’s Place, a unique retail destination next to Gillette Stadium, is one of Tom’s more challenging projects. The facility was designed to incorporate the function and beauty of solar into its surroundings using an on-site renewable solar system with color-changing LED lighting. Tom designed and detailed the structural components of this facility in its entirety, working closely with the design, architectural, and electrical teams due to the structure’s exposed nature. A non-traditional frame layout and specially designed foundations forced Tom to think outside of the box to create the most accommodating, eye-catching solution possible.
