Design Achievement – The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Education selected DLR Group to design an educational facilities master plan and set a new direction for education in the UVI. The master plan encompasses more than 2.7 million SF of educational space in 45 facilities across St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas. This portfolio of aging schools is rapidly deteriorating in the tropical environment and many buildings have been damaged by Category 5 hurricanes over the years, including Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria in 2017. The four primary components of the master plan address spatial agility, school safety, sustainability, and community partnership. These components are informed by a comprehensive set of guiding principles for learning environments in the UVI established by more than 45 stakeholders including government officials, educational leaders, teachers, students, parents, community, and industry partners.
Scope Summary – The scope of this project includes the delivery of educational specifications, building programs, sustainability and energy goals, and design concepts to create 21st-century learning environments. DLR Group is providing educational specifications, building programs, recommendations for renewable energy production, and design concepts to create 21st-century learning environments for learners in the Virgin Islands.
