Design Achievement - DLR Group teamed with NRG Energy to design a signature solar array at MetLife Stadium, home to the National Football League's New York Jets and New York Football Giants. DLR Group used building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) panels mounted to the upper rim of the stadium to create the Solar Ring, a striking visual element encircling the top of MetLife Stadium. The BIPV panels are illuminated with LED lighting and programmed to display the signature blue and green colors of the Giants and the Jets. The Solar Ring can be programmed to display an unlimited number of hues to enhance athletic and entertainment events at the stadium.

Scope Summary - The Solar Ring at MetLife Stadium consists of 1,350 panels assembled into 47 individual frames. The panels are made of custom glass and monocrystalline photovoltaic cells. The frames were constructed in the stadium parking lot, then staged around the outside of the stadium on flat-bed trucks and lifted by crane to the rim of the stadium for application. The LED lighting system ringing the stadium is approximately 3/4 mile in length and consists of 916 fixtures. The outdoor rated, high-brightness custom LED luminaires are controlled by decentralized engines inside enclosures located on the Solar Ring itself. Using fiber optic cables, the entire system is connected back to a central server room with a single lighting control engine remotely triggered by the MetLife Stadium lighting crew. DLR Group provided architecture and engineering services for the project.
