NRG Stadium Solar InstallationThe NRG Stadium
Houston, TX 77054
Design Achievement - NRG Stadium, home of the NFL’s Houston Texans, celebrated the beginning of the 2015 season with the unveiling of four brand new, modern renewable energy structures on its campus. DLR Group’s design integrates solar power into the stadium experience in creative ways by including an electric vehicle ‘EVgo’ car charging lot, a transparent solar canopy located at the main entrance, and two solar pedestrian bridges linking the main parking lot areas to the stadium. In addition to the elegant architecture and engineering of the structures, design elements in the photovoltaic arrays include the integration of custom LED multi-colored NRG branded light fixtures inset between the overhead solar panels. These elements complement the bridge structure to create a fun processional experience for Texans fans as they approach the stadium. Each installation and NRG brand expressions support the excitement of game day and connect it to NRG’s mission in increasing awareness of opportunities in alternative energy production and usage.
Scope Summary - The solar system at NRG Stadium consists of 600 solar panels spread across four separate asset locations for a total system size of 180kW. The array will produce enough energy annually to offset 22 households in the Houston area. The 4,500 SF weatherproof canopy at the main entrance provides a sheltered area in front of the stadium for ticket queuing and vendor sales directly under the PV panels during events. The arrays at pedestrian bridges redefine the visual landscape for fans and team members alike and the electric vehicle ‘EVgo’ car charging lot allows fans to park in a prime location close to the stadium to charge their electrical vehicle during games. DLR Group provided structural and electrical engineering, as well as architecture services.
