Design Achievement - Named the Best Bar in America by Esquire magazine in 2006, Nye's Polonaise Room has been a Minneapolis institution for 66 years. Yet, even institutions need reinvention. DLR Group’s approach to the reimagining of a community icon focuses on the raw and honest elements in the space and gives them a twist to surprise and delight patrons. The design exposes an original brick wall on which local artists painted a 60-foot long mural of classic Nye’s personalities. Beautifully crafted millwork with custom designed mirrors at the rear bar hint at the history of Nye’s but remain firmly rooted in the present. Classic one-inch hexagon black and white floor tiles provide the perfect back drop for Nye’s signature red and gold upholstery. You can’t recreate history, so the owner’s wanted to create a classy, kitschy, contemporary, and ultimately a different Nye’s to serve as the gathering space for the next generation of polka hipsters and sing-a-long songsters in Minneapolis.

Scope Summary – The scope of work for this project encompassed renovation of a 1,000 SF bar to reinvent a classic Minneapolis institution. This modernization of a classic corner bar in the heart of Minneapolis's northeast neighborhood focused on three core elements. the bar, the piano, and a graffiti wall. Original salvaged light fixtures create a focal point over the bar and the piano, lending authenticity to the space. Custom light fixtures over the booths were designed by DLR Group and produced by local craftsman. Local graffiti artists were commissioned to create a graffiti mural spanning the entire length of the room. DLR Group provided architecture and interior design services.
