Design Achievement - The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum preserves and interprets the Patuxent River Naval Air Base history and the heritage of advancing naval aviation technology. DLR Group's design creates a museum that explores the science and progress of naval aviation through experiential learning. Dedicated to those who have employed their talents to advancing naval aviation research, development, testing and evaluation, the Museum serves as a repository of artifacts, photographs and film, documents and related heritage memorabilia from Patuxent River and other stations, including Warminster, Pennsylvania, and Trenton, New Jersey. The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum preserves, interprets and teaches by demonstrative hands-on and interactive displays, explaining in virtual and real-time terms the science and technology of naval aviation.
Scope Summary - The new, single-story, 22,000 SF museum contains a large exhibit hall that accommodates the display of aircraft and aviation technology and features hands-on interactive displays. The museum also includes an auditorium, gift shop, administrative offices, toilet rooms, and mechanical spaces. As the first project for St Mary’s County to attempt and achieve a sustainable certification, the project pursued two paths of certification, LEED and Green Globes. Having received a Three Green Globes rating and achieving LEED-NC Gold, the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum is one of the first dual-certified museums in the United States. Sustainable elements include: LED lighting; passive solar concepts and day-lighting controls; energy recovery HVAC; high-efficiency, condensing boiler system; mass-coupled, radiant heating; de-stratification fans to prevent thermal stratification in the high bay exhibit space; fabric air distribution; and recycled materials, material reuse, and locally sourced materials. DLR Group provided architecture, interior design, MEP engineering, lighting, technology design, energy modeling, and sustainable design services.
