Design Achievement – The Anacostia community waited for more than a decade for funding to be allocated for a new neighborhood recreation center. DLR Group delivered a facility that provides flexible recreation program areas through a design that is an engaging contextual response to the nearby woods of Fort Dupont Park. The design features a simple building massing consisting of two larger volumes, connected by a third circulation and program concourse. A frosted channel-glass entry cube welcomes users into the building. A long glass bar parallels the road and appears as an uninterrupted glass pavilion in the park. Inside, the concourse is open and visually contiguous through the use of frameless glass partitions. Integral shading is achieved through fritted glass panels depicting natural forms and textures. These are held off the face of the building in order to provide shade and reduce mechanical cooling loads. The larger gymnasium volume is recessed into a naturally sloping topography to reduce the visual impact of the overall building.
Scope Summary – This 25,000 SF recreation center caters to an active senior population, critical community youth programs, as well as a variety of youth athletic organizations. The program of the facility includes a full-sized gymnasium, fitness area, dedicated senior and teen spaces, multi-purpose classrooms, computer lab, locker rooms and pool facilities, as well as support spaces. The facility includes passive solar control measures that are central to the design of the facility and designed to LEED Gold standards. DLR Group provided architecture and planning services.
DLR Group acquired Sorg Architects in September 2015. Today, the combined design expertise and resources of Sorg and DLR Group serve clients as a global, integrated design firm committed to elevating the human experience through design.
