Design Achievement - The renovation of the University of Minnesota men’s hockey locker suite gives the Gophers a new recruiting edge and its players an improved, year-round experience off the ice. The existing space inside Mariucci Arena, which opened in 1993, had become outdated by most modern standards and, as such, the home to one of college hockey’s most storied and respected programs was in dire need of an overhaul. The coaching staff’s primary goal for updating the space was to incorporate appropriate technology and graphics that would create a “wow factor” for recruiting and enhance the overall experience, but to have the regular day-to-day experience of the student-athletes be the top priority. DLR Group designers listened carefully and have delivered a sensational new home for the team that achieves those goals. The updated spaces provide players and coaches all the tools they need to excel on the ice, but also gives them a modern, inviting and comfortable environment in which they can enjoy spending their time both in- and out-of-season. This approach is most apparent in the team lounge, where players are able to study and relax while watching TV or playing video games, which also gives  them the opportunity to continuously build camaraderie. From efficient layout of spaces, use of quality materials, and integration of technology and graphic content, the entire project is held to a high standard that is unmatched anywhere in college hockey.

Scope Summary - The nearly-13,000 SF existing locker facility and adjacent spaces were gutted and completely re-envisioned, positively impacting every space—including the locker room, training room, equipment area, meeting space, coaches’ offices and team lounge—that players and coaches utilize on a day-to-day basis. Dark metal and wood are used throughout to exemplify the blue-collar, hard-nosed qualities a University of Minnesota hockey player strives to personify, while graphics, sleek patterns, lighting and technology are used to illustrate the speed and precision the players embody on the ice. The main corridor outside the locker room pays homage to past national champions, Olympians, All-Americans, NHL players, and award-winners, vividly reminding current players of the high standards of the program. DLR Group provided architecture, interior design, structural and MEP engineering.
