Design Achievement – When the Minnesota Department of Corrections issued a condemnation order of an existing 90-year-old Wabasha County Jail, the Wabasha County Board of Commissioners needed to find a solution. DLR Group's design team worked with the Board to assess various options, including boarding out, renovating existing county or other facilities, and new construction on a greenfield site. Sensitive to constituents' concerns of fiscal responsibility, the plan is an operationally-efficient new facility utilizing high-functioning/low-maintenance materials. The design also re-uses and reconfigures existing workstations supplemented by new staff area installations, provided by local cabinet makers.

Scope Summary – This new 87,600 SF facility was master planned for independent expansion of each component of the justice center including parking and the geothermal well field. Sited on a 40-acre parcel, the complex includes a 72-bed jail, a two-courtroom courthouse, and space for the Wabasha County Sheriff's Department. The jail support areas are designed to accommodate a doubling of the bed count if needed. The project features indirect daylighting in the jail, a direct connection between the jail and courts, and a host of energy saving systems including geothermal heating and cooling, high-tech thermal glass, and economical insulated precast concrete wall panels. DLR Group provided architecture and interior design services.
