Escape into DLR Group’s Better-verse at BDNY

Each year, BDNY – the leading trade fair and conference for hospitality’s boutique and lifestyle design community – hosts Designed Spaces. Each of these experiential popups is created by a leading hospitality design team using products from multiple BDNY exhibitors/sponsors. This year, we debut our Better-verse.

The muse of a midnight garden inspired rich colors, high-contrast shadows, and earthen elements. Spring, summer, fall, and winter each have their own multi-sensory expression.

Authenticity is central to the idea of reclaiming physical space. Crystal lighting is truly crystal, not plastic. Real plants adorn the spaces. And each seasonal room features 120 yards of fabric, much of it custom fabricated.

From the Metaverse to augmented reality, growth in the digital landscape challenges the natural universe. Better-verse reclaims the physical realm and reconnects visitors with the sensory delights of changing seasons. Thoughtful digital interjections don’t aim to substitute reality, but instead expand visitors’ consciousness with playful exploration.

The Better-verse forms the ideal setting to bring industry innovators together, hosting multiple sessions that feature some of our leaders:

  • ESG: Why Impact Matters More than Ever, featuring Principal and Research + Development Leader B. Sanborn
  • BD18 All Stars: Where are they Now? Featuring Principal and Hospitality Interior Design Leader Valentina Castellon
  • Meet the BD18, featuring Interior Designer Danielle Farchmin
  • Making of the Space, featuring Interior Designers Vanessa Vu and Valentina Castellon

Better-verse will also host partner sessions exploring luxury, culture, and more.

Bringing Better-verse to Life

Six months, eight vendor partners around the globe, and hundreds of sequentially cascading installation decisions. Bringing the ambitious Better-verse concept into reality relied on a full team effort to design and specify an installation that can be built on-site at New York City’s Javit Center in under 72 hours. Once that timer runs out, thousands of visitors will pour through the Better-verse during the fast-paced two-day event.

I can’t wait to see how people interact with this immersive experience. We want to show that we can escape reality by designing a better reality, by combining design and technology for one-of-a-kind, transformative experience."
