Transformation of Grossmont Center Begins in La Mesa

(La Mesa, Calif., March 2, 2026) – Construction is officially underway on the first phases of Grossmont Center in La Mesa as the development begins its transformation into a modern and vibrant community destination. Designed by DLR Group in partnership with Federal Realty Investment Trust, the project draws inspiration from the mesa ecology and cultural context of East County, San Diego, and will revitalize the long-standing outdoor retail center through facade enhancements, placemaking upgrades, and the creation of a new north-facing entry experience.

A cornerstone of La Mesa since its opening in 1961, Grossmont Center has long served as a beloved gathering space for residents. The project will reimagine the destination through placemaking, local context, and experience-driven design, creating a community-driven hub where commerce and connection come together.

The early phased enhancements are focused on strengthening identity, improving arrival, and elevating the everyday experience of the center. A new north entry portal establishes a clear and welcoming front door, while targeted façade improvements and refreshed storefront expressions create a more cohesive architectural character. Landscape and placemaking upgrades to the main paseo and interior courtyard further reinforce Grossmont Center’s role as an open-air gathering place rooted in its Southern California setting.

Upon completion in summer 2028, improvements will enhance Grossmont Center’s architectural identity and create a stronger sense of arrival along its north edge. The targeted upgrades reinforce the center’s long-standing role as a community gathering place while positioning it for continued evolution. DLR Group is providing architecture and planning services.
