How The Past Is Shaping The Future Of Workplace Design
Principal and Workplace Design Leader Michael Vander Ploeg explores how history is shaping the next generation of workplaces, and why character and story can do more to attract talent than a brand-new building. He looks at three approaches: converting historic structures into modern a headquarters, designing new buildings that draw on the history of their sites, and renovating aging buildings instead of tearing them down.
Examples include Terminal 1 on the Vancouver, Washington, waterfront, where a terraced public promenade recalls the site’s shipbuilding past, and The Portland Building, Michael Graves’ 1980s landmark, which was renovated and modernized rather than replaced. These projects show how respecting a building’s or site’s past can pay off in sustainability, employee engagement, and community support.
