DLR Group’s Tom Gallagher speaks to Gaudi’s legacy and most influential projects
Smithsonian Magazine interviewed Tom Gallagher, DLR Group principal and New York studio leader, on Antoni Gaudí’s legacy across Barcelona, from Casa Vicens to the Sagrada Família. Gallagher explains how Gaudí’s work moved beyond Art Nouveau, using nature, structure, and place to shape ideas that continue to influence architecture today.
Gallagher also describes Gaudí’s ability to balance emotion and scale as a defining influence on his own work. “A goal of architecture is to create comfort and hominess, along with vastness and surprise,” he says, noting that Gaudí “was creating intimacy and grandeur at the same time, and that’s so difficult to do.” The experience of spaces like Casa Vicens continues to shape how Gallagher approaches movement and perception in design.
