Virtua Health recognizes that delivering world-class cancer care requires bringing the most advanced treatment technologies closer to home. As a regional healthcare leader committed to patient-centered innovation, and through their partnership with Penn Medicine, Virtua’s goal was to expand access to proton therapy on its Voorhees campus, providing South Jersey residents with the same caliber of care available at major academic medical centers while elevating the patient experience through thoughtful, efficient design. DLR Group | Tsoi Kobus Design’s design creates a compact, high-performance treatment environment featuring the world’s first installation of Varian’s ProBeam 360 gantry.
This sets a precedent for the next generation of single-room proton therapy centers. The facility enhances clinical workflows and reduces patient stress by embedding the proton center directly within an existing outpatient radiation oncology department. Reimagined adjacencies improve staff efficiency while minimizing walking distances for patients. The layout and finishes reinforce Virtua’s commitment to patient comfort and clarity. This addition improves access to proton therapy while supporting Penn Medicine’s mission to deliver innovative care across the region.
The 9,100-SF addition and 2,400-SF renovation to Virtua Health’s Voorhees hospital campus included one new treatment room equipped with Varian’s ProBeam 360 compact gantry and its associated clinical and technical support spaces. By repurposing portions of the existing radiation oncology department to house support functions, the design minimized new construction and reduced overall cost. The design emphasized operational efficiency through thoughtful adjacencies, optimized circulation paths, and flexible infrastructure planning to accommodate future technology upgrades. Scope focused on areas for pit-level access, treatment-level program, and PSR-level services. Construction occurred while adjacent oncology services remained operational, requiring precise phasing and coordination to avoid disruption. The integration of advanced proton therapy technology into a live clinical setting required close coordination with Penn Medicine, Virtua Health, and Varian to ensure continuous operations during construction.
