Situated on 16 acres adjacent to the University of Connecticut Health Center’s Farmington campus, JAX Genomic Medicine’s Jackson Laboratory brings researchers focused on human genetics into clinical collaboration with universities and hospitals. DLR Group | Tsoi Kobus Design’s design creates cooperative and adaptable space that forges a collegial community at the epicenter of a new scientific cluster. The transparent and welcoming environment both reflects JAX’s energy and culture and serve as a robust recruiting tool, with 50% of targeted staff recruited within two months of project completion. The design encourages collaboration through innovated shared core lab organization, visual connections between spaces, and amenity spaces that balance the intensity of scientific focus.
The 189,000 SF facility sustains 300 biomedical researchers, technicians, and support staff with office, research, education, and amenity spaces, as well as public spaces. State-of-the-art labs are designed to adapt as lab ratios flex with research initiatives. A focus on energy efficiency, rainwater harvesting, and site wetland conservation, achieving LEED Gold certification.
