“Liminal Space Research” on Making the Museum Podcast

In this episode of “Making the Museum,” DLR Group’s Dan Clevenger, Monika Smith, and Helen Ho explore the concept of liminal spaces and its role in museum design. Part one of two, this first episode introduces DLR Group’s research study on liminal spaces. Guests discuss how transitional or “in‑between” areas can shape visitor perception, emotion, and engagement.

This episode also highlights research explaining that liminal spaces like corridors, thresholds, and transitions play an important role in how visitors process information and reset between exhibits. It also shows that thoughtfully designed in-between moments can improve wayfinding, emotional engagement, and how well visitors remember their experience.
