DLR Group Weighs in on the Future of NASCAR’s Racetracks

In a recent interview with Sports Business Journal titled “Will Another Permanent Track Ever be Built?” Principal and Sports Design Leader Bob Carlson, AIA, LEED AP, weighed in on what the future may hold for the popular motorsport.

DLR Group designed the renovation of the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where NASCAR has twice built a temporary racetrack above the football field. Bob says that the use of temporary racetracks is “a really interesting trend because it reaches out to people who maybe don’t have as big an interest as core fans.”

The firm is currently renovating the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina, where NASCAR will run its annual All-Star Race this year, and has worked on infield projects at tracks in Richmond, Talladega, and Phoenix.
