Eastern Washington University sought a more connected campus experience and stronger polytechnic identity despite facing challenges around declining enrollment, excess building capacity, and changing state requirements. Our campus master plan aligns mission, space, and stewardship through strategic reinvestment, enhanced connectivity, and a framework for phased redevelopment. The plan positions the university to strengthen student engagement, improve resource utilization, reinforce its emerging polytechnic identity, and create a more connected, vibrant campus experience.
A robust visioning and engagement process with campus leadership, students, and community stakeholders informs a plan that balances renewal with flexibility. Strategic reinvestment in existing buildings increases density and activity, while selective removal of outdated facilities enables new housing development, enhanced open space, and improved campus gateways.
Redesigned wayfinding and circulation systems unify previously disconnected areas of the main and urban satellite campuses. Purposeful secondary spaces, including flexible lawns and plazas such as the Technical Arts Lawn, place academic work on display and encourage cross-disciplinary interaction.
Integrated decarbonization strategies position the campus to responsibly manage its physical assets while advancing sustainability goals. Together, these design elements foster connection, pride, and collaboration, transforming the campus into a cohesive, adaptable environment that supports learning, engagement, and institutional resilience.
The Eastern Washington University Campus Master Plan encompasses approximately 300 acres across the main campus and an urban satellite location. Developed within an accelerated six-month timeframe, the plan provides a comprehensive, state-aligned 10-year roadmap for phased campus development and renewal. The scope includes campus-wide space analysis, building suitability assessments, and capacity studies informed by prior planning efforts and landmark surveys.
Recommendations address housing replacement, academic and student life spaces, open space and landscape strategies, circulation and transportation improvements, and long-term infrastructure and sustainability initiatives, including an integrated decarbonization framework. The plan establishes clear development priorities that respond to financial constraints while preserving flexibility for future leadership and funding opportunities. Extensive engagement with students, faculty, administrators, city representatives, and peer design teams ensured broad buy-in and clarity throughout the process. Coordination with external consultants, including civil, transportation, and engineering disciplines, supported a data-driven and implementable outcome.
