Hesperia High School’s Center for the Arts is a multi-purpose, community-centered facility that establishes a long-awaited performance venue within the district and strengthens connections between campus and city. Located in the heart of Hesperia, the project responds to both educational and civic priorities, creating a shared destination for students, staff, and community members. Our design draws inspiration from the surrounding Mojave landscape, translating the horizontal presence of regional mesas and the movement of the Mojave River into a composition of solid forms and carved spaces. This concept carries into the interior, where a river element in the lobby links primary entrances and reinforces openness, visibility, and a sense of collective ownership.
The building supports flexibility and long-term adaptability, integrating a full-scale auditorium, black box theater, band and choral rooms, and a community resource center with adaptable office and meeting spaces. Each program element accommodates a range of performances, events, and community uses while maintaining clarity and efficiency. Through an integrated design approach, building systems and structures work seamlessly with the architecture, including a concealed mechanical strategy that serves the large auditorium without disrupting its clean ceiling expression and a structural system that meets stringent seismic requirements. The result is a cohesive, high-performing arts facility that expands opportunity, supports creative expression, and establishes a new cultural anchor for Hesperia High School and its community.
