DLR Group to Present at COAA Connect Fall 2023
Join our team at the upcoming Construction Owners Association of America Connect Fall 2023 conference in Orlando, Fla.
Principal and Higher Education Design Leader, Benjamin Strain, AIA, LEED AP, will be presenting a session titled, “The Importance of Community: A Swarthmore Case Study”. He will be accompanied by co-presenter Susan Smythe, Senior Project Manager at Swarthmore College.
Their session will explore how the new Swarthmore College Dining and Community Commons represents an opportunity to reimagine how we live in community with one another. The new facility is a game-changer for Swarthmore College and features several components of interest to practically any Owner, including:
- Phased construction challenges;
- Design elements supportive of the College’s “To Zero by Thirty-Five” carbon neutrality goals;
- Using the built environment to foster connection and collaboration.
Together, the new dining hall and community commons will serve as a hub of activity and a cornerstone for social gathering on campus. The 800-seat dining hall will offer 10 robust food platforms, including allergy-aware, vegan, and international. Retail dining will be incorporated in the existing facility to activate the community commons and provide late-night dining options. Various sustainable design solutions meet the college’s desire for high energy efficiency, the use of on and off-site renewable energy, zero waste options, biophilic design, and local food sourcing.
Benjamin and Susan’s session will be on the third day of the conference, Wednesday, November 15 from 9:45 AM – 10:45 AM.
