Magnolia Public Schools is solving its need for additional space to accommodate rapid enrollment growth through a new two-story public charter school that supports a STEAM educational model. Our design for the new Magnolia Science Academy 5 achieves the district’s vision with a progressive building that is a symbol of academic excellence for the community. Learning is on full display with a gallery walk that celebrates student creations ranging from 2D, 3D, digital displays, work in progress, and final performance tasks. A dynamic courtyard complements the robust collaboration space within the core of the building. This double-story hub connects both levels of learning studios and creates a vibrant place where students learn, work together, and communicate with each other.
The new school’s location at the edge of an existing retail lot establishes its significance within the community. A perforated metal screen panel at the corner of Winnetka Avenue and Gault Street highlights the corner and its expression on the street, while also serving as a shading device for students. The metal screen panels continue in the courtyard for a cohesive fencing design that wraps and protects the school. Magnolia Science Academy 5 is being constructed in phases and will accommodate 565 students upon full buildout.
