(Washington, D.C., Sept. 1, 2026) – The design-build team comprised of integrated design firm DLR Group and construction firm GCS-SIGAL, along with Mayor Muriel Bowser, the DC Department of Parks and Recreations, and the DC Department of General Services (DGS), celebrated the start of the renovation on the historic Crummell School on Monday, June 22, 2026. For the Ivy City neighborhood in Washington, D.C., the project will transform the long-vacant landmark into a vibrant hub for community life.

Originally designed in 1910 by Municipal Architect Snowden Ashford, the Crummell School is a designated D.C. landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The renovation will create a 22,570-SF community center featuring modern community and multi-purpose spaces, outdoor amenities, and upgraded building systems designed to support long-term sustainability. The project is targeting LEED Silver certification and includes energy-efficient systems and responsive site design.

DLR Group’s design balances preservation and innovation, restoring the building’s historic envelope while enhancing accessibility and usability. Key architectural highlights include:

• Restoration of the historic facade, including masonry repair, stucco restoration, and reconstruction of original features such as the cupola and dormers using archival documentation
• New 1,000-SF glass and metal main entry addition, providing ADA-compliant access, clearly distinguishing the contemporary design from the historic structure
• Restoration of one of the interior classroom finishes to original historic condition, using salvaged materials where possible

The revitalized campus will also include new green space, a playground and splash pad, restored basketball courts, and improved pedestrian access. The design-build team engaged extensively with the community to ensure the project reflects local priorities and supports diverse programming for youth, families, and seniors.

With an estimated completion of Spring 2028, the Crummell Community Center will serve as a cornerstone for recreation, wellness, and connection in Ivy City, honoring its past while supporting a stronger future.
